Production
While filming Dark Phoenix, Jessica Chastain pitched the concept for a female-led espionage thriller in the vein of the Mission: Impossible and James Bond franchises to Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg. The premise was developed, and in May 2018, it was reported that Chastain will appear with Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, and Lupita Nyong’o in the picture, which Kinberg would direct.
During the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, the project was offered to buyers, with Global Road Entertainment and Amazon Studios competing for distribution rights, with Universal Pictures securing the North American distribution rights with a $20 million plus bid.
Chastain sent out a plea for male actor casting recommendations in February of this year. Sebastian Stan and Édgar Ramrez joined the cast of the film in May 2019, with Marion Cotillard stepping out. [8] In June, Diane Kruger was added to the roster.
Filming began in July 2019, with sites such as Senate House being used in Paris, Morocco, and London. Emilio Insolera joined the cast of the film in September 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional photography was shot in London in July 2020 using precautionary measures.
